Title of the session: QoE in 4G mobile networks and beyond

Motivation and objectives
Future mobile networks will have to encompass an ever increasing amount of user-traffic, accompanied by incremental user-demands in terms of experienced quality. In 4G networks and beyond, users are expected to be “always best-connected”, in a highly dense and heterogeneous environment. Unfortunately, QoE in mobile networks has always been an afterthought, and thus, QoE management architectures and mechanisms need to be devised as an add-on layer. Nevertheless, we may envision that the networks of the future (5G, smart grid, etc.) can be originally designed with inherent QoE characteristics and QoE provisioning mechanisms. Identifying this opportunity, the aim of this special session is to reveal critical open issues and provide solutions towards designing the QoE-aware and QoE-centric mobile networks of the future.
In this special session, we invite contributions for the following non-exhaustive list of topics:
- Re-designing mobile networks with QoE prerequisites
- QoE-centric network and application control mechanisms
- Cross-layer, context- and user-aware QoE management
- Network architectures and signaling towards QoE support
- SDN and NFV as enablers for QoE provisioning
- Modelling and mapping relationships between QoS and QoE
- QoS and QoE monitoring in 4G networks and beyond
- Standardization activities of QoE methodologies
- Towards 5G QoE ecosystems (monetization of QoE, ELAs, etc.)
- QoE management for OTT services, cloud, gaming, etc.
- Methodologies & methods of quality assessment
- Subjective or objective evaluation of experiences on mobile devices
- QoE in the area of IoT, smart-grid and M2M.
We invite both short and full paper submissions describing novel, previously unpublished work. For paper submission instructions, please consult the Author Kit of QoMEX 2015. Extended deadline 20th March 2015.
Short biography of the organizers:
Nikos Passas received his Diploma (honors) from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Patras, Greece, and his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, Greece, in 1992 and 1997, respectively. From 1992 to 1995 he was a research engineer at the Greek National Research Center “Demokritos”. Since 1995, he has been with the Communication Networks Laboratory of the University of Athens, working as a sessional lecturer and senior researcher in a number of national and European research projects. He has also served as a guest editor and technical program committee member in prestigious magazines and conferences, such as IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Journal, IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, IEEE PIMRC, IEEE Globecom, etc. Dr. Passas has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences and has also published 1 book and 10 book chapters. His research interests are in the area of mobile network architectures and protocols. He is particularly interested in QoS for wireless networks, medium access control, and mobility management. Dr. Passas is a member of the IEEE and a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
Christos Verikoukis got his PhD from the Signal Theory and Communications Department of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, in 2000, in the area of Broadband Indoor Wireless Communications. Since February 2004 he is senior research associate in the CTTC. Dr. Verikoukis has participated or is currently participating in several European (ACTS, IST FP5, FP6& FP7, H2020, Marie-Curie, eTEN and INTERREG) and National (in Spain and in Greece) funded projects. He is an IEEE Senior Member.His research interests include ARQ schemes, MAC protocols, RRM algorithms, cross-layer techniques and cooperative communications in wireless communications systems such as WLAN, WiMAX and Wireless Sensor Networks.
Eirini Liotou received the Diploma in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2006. She obtained the MSc in New Technologies of Informatics & Telecommunications from the University of Athens and the MSc in Communications & Signal Processing from the Imperial College of London. She has worked as a Software Engineer in Siemens AG and as a Senior Software Engineer in Siemens Enterprise Communications within the company’s R&D department for the SME business sector. Currently, she is working as a researcher in the Green, Adaptive and Intelligent Networking Group within the Communication Networks Laboratory of the Department of Informatics & Telecommunications in the University of Athens. In parallel, she is pursuing her PhD in the area of Quality of Experience (QoE) characterization and provision in LTE-A heterogeneous networks.
Hisham Elshaer received his B.Sc. from the faculty of Engineering of Ain-Shams University in Cairo, Egypt in 2008. He received his M.Sc. in wireless systems from the royal institute of technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden in 2012 where he spent the first year in the technical university of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain. From August 2008 to February 2010 he worked as a quality of service engineer in Mobinil in Egypt. From September 2011 to March 2012 he was with Ericsson R&D in Stockholm as master thesis student. From May 2012 to June 2013 he worked as a telecom consultant in Tieto Sweden AB where he worked on developing system and link level simulators for 3G and 4G networks. Since July 2013 he has been with Vodafone group R&D in the UK as an early stage researcher under the EU Crossfire project where he is working on developing new 5G technologies. He is also studying towards a PhD in King’s college in London. His research interests include 5G network architecture and interference management in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks.
