Tour of Ancient Messini
! minimum attendance 30 full paying participants required for this event to run
This tour visit’s the largest working archaeological site in the Peloponnese. Nestling at the foot of Mount Ithomi, Messini was the 2nd largest city in Ancient Peloponnese. Named after it’s founder Queen Messini, the site is significant in terms of its size, form and state of preservation. It enjoys, amongst other things, the advantage of never having been destroyed or covered by later settlements, and is located on an unspoiled inland site. Surrounded by 9km of fortified walls and towers and guarded by 2 entrances it reached its power over 2500 years ago. Such was its power that the Spartans waged 3 wars against them where the residents either fled or became the helots of the Spartans. A guided tour of Ancient Messini includes the Arcadian Gate, the museum and the archaeological site. Included within the site is the central temple area to Asklepios (the god of fertility, life and death), sanctuaries, the propylaeum of the market, the council theatre or Bouleuterion, the main theatre and the magnificent stadium.

Tour of the Castles of Messinia
! minimum attendance 30 full paying participants required for this event to run
Our tour to the impressive castles of Pylos and Methoni begins with a scenic journey via the historical Bay of Naverone and the city of Pylos.
Pylos Castle – Two castles are built on the summits of the two hills at the ends of the Bay of Navarino, overlooking the town of Pylos: the older castle of Navarino, called Palaiokastron or Palaionavarinon and the more recent castle, called Niokastron. The latter was built in 1573 by the Turks, and in 1686 was given over to the Venetians. It again came under Turkish domination in 1715, along with the castle of Koroni and Palaionavarino. In 1816 it was captured by Ibrahim Pasha and remained under his control until 1828 when it was liberated by the French general Maison. During the Second World War it was used as the seat of the Italian and, later, the German headquarters. Methoni Castle – A city fortified from ancient times and a renowned harbour. It has been identified as the city that Homer mentions under the name “ampeloessa” (of vine leaves), as the last of the seven cities that Agamemnon offers Achilles in order to subdue his rage. Nowadays, one of the most photographed castles in Greece which continues to impress. The major building works within the castle are from the Venetian period who built on the ancient battlements.

Take a visit to the cafe and enjoy a drink in the beautiful surroundings and stop in at the shop to treat yourself to specialist local delicacies. The path of the stream you can follow today is a wonderful path in nature with the sound of water and the beautiful old watermills with nice corners and huge stone boundary walls. The current owners bought the mill, house and the property that surrounds it in 2005 because of the beauty of the landscape. For many years enjoyed only orange and lemon producing on the estate until he decided to revive again the old watermill.

Panigiri – traditional evening in Koroni
! minimum attendance 30 full paying participants required for this event to run
Participants will be transferred to the wonderful town of Koroni. In the 6th and 7th centuries AD, the Byzantines built a fortress there. Following the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade in 1204, a Venetian fleet occupied it and converted the port into a provisioning station ‘where all passing ships could receive a month’s ration’, a custom maintained, we are told, when the place became a regular Venetian colony. There is free time to visit the quaint shops surrounding the main streets, before the start of a traditional Greek Panigiri in the harbor side Taverna. A ‘Panigiri‘, not to be missed, experience dishes of Greek food traditionally served whilst enjoying the local wine and sampling an ouzo, with live music providing the opportunity to join in with the Greek dancers.

Children 4 – 12yrs 20% discount

Return transportation and all food and drink provided during the Panigiri.
